What are the houses in astrology?

If you see your birth chart (A chart representing where the planets were in the universe at the time of your birth.) in modern astrology it looks like a pie divided into 12 equal parts. Those yummy parts are called houses. They represent an important part of your life. when you put all of them together it creates you in all your uniqueness. 

Let's see quickly what they show:

First House 

Natural sign: Aries 

Its ruler: Mars. (Meaning: this planet affects this house)  

It represents Personality and Physical self.

Second House

Natural sign: Taurus 

Its ruler: Venus. 

It represents Self-esteem, belongings and the ability to provide. 

Third House

Natural sign: Gemini 

Its ruler: Mercury. 

It represents Personal knowledge, Environment, Siblings, Neighbours.

Fourth House 

Natural sign: Cancer 

Its ruler: The Moon. 

It represents Foundation of life, family and home.

Fifth House

natural sign: Leo 

Its ruler: The Sun. 

It represents Romance, Children, Risk, Creativity and Fun.

Sixth House

natural sign: Virgo

Natural ruler: Mercury

It represents Health, Service, Personal responsibilities, work colleagues.

Seventh House

Natural sign: Libra

Its ruler: Venus

It represents Partnership and significant relationships.

Eighth House

Natural sign: Scorpio

Its ruler: Pluto 

It represents Intimate relationships, Sex, Death and Rebirth.

Ninth House

Natural sign: Sagittarius 

Its ruler: Jupiter

It represents Education, Travel, Religion, Philosophy.

Tenth House

Natural sign: Capricorn

Its ruler: Saturn

It represents Reputation, Career, Responsibilities.

Eleventh House

Natural sign: Aquarius

Its ruler: Uranus

It represents Friends, Groups, Shared Goals. 

Twelfth House

Natural sign: Pisces

Its ruler: Neptune

It represents Subconscious, the unknown, Past influences.

These houses can be categorised into Angular, Succedent or Cadent.

Angular Houses like First, Fourth, Seventh and Tenth are correspondent to Cardinal sign. They are associated with a person's personality. 

Succedent Houses like Second Fifth, Eighth and Eleventh correspond to Fixed signs they're associated with Stability, Purpose and Possession.

Cadent Houses Third, Sixth, Ninth and Twelfth corresponds with Mutable signs and are associated with Relationships, travel, subconscious, health etc.

Further, these houses are divided into four elements:

Fire for personal self:

First: Physical body,

Fifth: The soul,

Ninth: mind and spirit.

Earth for the material world:

Second: Belongings

Sixth: Occupation regular work.

Tenth: Reputation, acknowledgement.

Air for The relationships and the world:

Third: Uncontrollable relationships Parents, Siblings etc.

Seventh: Friends, Partners, Lovers.

Eleventh: Relationship with the world like groups with shared goals.

Water for Endings and Conclusions:

Fourth: End of Physical body

Eighth: Death and Rebirth

Twelfth: The outcomes and results of life that has been chosen.
